Turning Performance Goals Into Mastery Goals



Athletes are notorious for setting performance related goals.

“I want to complete a 15 minute 5k.”
“I want to squat 2 times my body weight.”

The problem with these types of goals is that when it comes time to test them a variety of factors can go into achieving them, many of which may be out of your control. What if it rains on the day of your 5k? What if you slept wrong the day you want to test your squat and you back is really soar?

If we instead focus on mastery goals we are less focused on a single outcome and more focused on the process that goes into achieving that outcome.

Journaling is one the key tools when working with my clients. It helps them reestablish the connection that most of them have lost due to information overload from “experts”. Weekly Fitness Tip

This week’s fitness tip is a couple of upper body hypertrophy exercises you can do with just a band and pull up bar.  If you are like me and are working on both endurance and strength these would be good movements to incorporate on a day when you need to give your legs a break from running and lower body strength work.  Give them a shot and let me know what you think.
